Android developer Yifan Lu has reverse engineered the Xperia Play’s native PlayStation emulator to make it run ripped PSX ISOs. That means you’re no longer limited to Crash Bandicoot or the handful of other PSX titles that have been officially released from Sony Ericsson. Instead, you can grab your original games from the attic, rip them into disc images, and bring them back to life on your Play. Not yet considering the legal haul that this whole issue will stir…

After rolling out the new market, Google did its level best by throwing up a new version of its integrated search app for Android and then promptly pulling it. New features in the magically disappearing app include: a svelte new interface with categorized results which puts web hits up top then contacts and more in the rows below. Also added is the ability to long press search history to remove questionable search items and country-specific results in countries with Google domains — think Google.ca, Google.ch, and so on. This may be part of the big search monster’s ongoing efforts to “evolve the Google design and experience” across all platforms. Sadly, search fanatics out there will have to wait to get their hands on this as Google fixes whatever evolutionary gremlins have wandered into its code.

Its here! Google has launched its new Android market. Designed to better showcase top applications and games, improved UI, and provide a quicker path to downloading, or purchasing products; Moreover introducing more merchandising for products.

As soon as you launch the app, you realize your looking at a totally revamped market that doesn’t resemble its predecessor in anyway; showing a promotional page that highlights top content on its home screen. The page has been tiled with colorful graphics that provide instant access to featured apps and games, whats new is that you can now find books and movies.

A horizontal tab bar including app lists has been introduced too. Users can now quickly flip through these lists by swiping right or left, checking out what other people are downloading in the Top Paid, Top Free, Top Grossing, Top New Paid, Top New Free, and Trending lists. To keep the lists fresh and relevant, they have been made country-specific for many of the top countries.

To help lure visitors and encourage them to become customers, the app details page has been changes, the app name and price have been moved into a compact action bar at the top of the page so that users can now quickly download or purchase an app. Directly below, users can flip through screen shots by swiping right or left,or scroll down to read the app’s description, what’s new, reviews, and more. To help promote products more effectively, the page now also includes a thumbnail link to the product video which is displayed at full screen when in landscape orientation.

As for users who are ready to buy, the click-to-purchase flow has been streamlined so that users can complete the purchase in two clicks from the app details page. During the purchase, users can also see a list of other apps developed by the same developer, helping cross-sell other products.

With a great new UI, easy access to app discovery lists, a convenient purchase flow, and more types of content, we believe that the new Market client will become a favorite for users and developers alike.

Google has begin a phased roll-out to phones running Android 2.2 or higher, however; if you cannot wait we have added a download link to get the market and install the .apk to your device. If at any point you want the old market back all you have to do is browse to manage applications, choose the market and click “Uninstall Updates”.

Daimler hasn’t had a sales success on its hands lately with its line of Smart cars, with sales festering after an initial boom. To try to re-capture the imagination of we smartphone-loving Americans with short attention spans, Smart unveiled the Smart Drive Kit last month and now, at the NY Auto Show, is giving it a proper demonstration. The iPhone app effectively takes the place of an infotainment system like Sync, including internet radio, navigation, and hands-free calling. It’s all demonstrated in a video after the break, and it looks cool — cool enough to even warrant $9.99 for the app and, maybe, the $49.99 annual fee for maps and navigation. What we still needing clarification on is whether that cradle will actually be priced at a ridiculous €240 ($326) and, if so, from which precious materials it has been crafted.

Starting this Thursday, March 25th, Verizon Wireless customers with one of nine select smartphones (Motorola Droid and Devour, HTC Droid Eris, various BlackBerrys) and data plan will be able to use Skype over the 3G network. As we heard before, Skype-to-Skype calls will not affect your VZW minutes, and now you’ve got the option to use the app for cheaper international dialing using the mobile app. Full list of compatible devices after the break, a list we’re hoping gets expanded in the not-so-distant future.

Microsoft is having a good old time at MIX10, showing off all sorts of new things. New things like… Internet Explorer 9, which has just been previewed at the developer event, and here’s what we’ve gleaned about it so far. First off, as expected it will support HTML5 video, boast a new Microsoft JavaScript engine which is codenamed “Chakra,” and it’ll support new-fangled web technologies like CSS3 and SVG2. Microsoft says one of its main goals with IE9 is to provide a faster browsing experience — always good news — though they don’t have things cranked quite as high as the competition just yet (remember, this is still early). Preliminary ACID3 tests on the preview show the IE9 scores a 55/100, up from IE8′s dismal 20/100 — a huge leap forward no doubt, but still a far cry from the Chrome, Opera, and Safari scores of 100. In both PCMag‘s and ZDNet’s SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark test, the preview performed competitively as well. Microsoft has also confirmed that IE9 will not support Windows XP, but the preview Microsoft is showing off plays nice with Vista SP2 and higher, meaning the shipping version will probably do the same. No shockers there, really. Microsoft’s also made the first developer preview of Internet Explorer 9 available for download today — hit the source link to check that out.
Chrome, Opera, and Safari do indeed score 100/100 in ACID3 testing, not “nearly” as previously stated. Thanks commenters for pointing out the obvious.

Whilst it seems like an interesting application, in practice is does bring up some privacy concerns, would you want someone pointing their mobile phone at you and then being able to find out exactly who you are from your various online profiles?

After a totally nonchalant, non-announcement type of showing by Erick Tseng at Eric Schmidt’s MWC keynote last week (thanks to Phone Scoop for pointing that out), the Android version of Google Earth is now available in the Market for download to the Nexus One (and, in the future, “most” other devices running 2.1 or newer). Previously, it’d only been available as a mobile app on the iPhone — a rare example of Google treating Apple’s platform better than its own — but with modern Android handsets getting extraordinarily speedy, it makes sense that they’d want to bring the graphics-intensive app home. It’s not as useful as Google Maps in the strictest sense of the word, but with touch control (multitouch in particular), it’s endlessly entertaining — and assuming you’ve got an unlimited data plan and a few free megabytes of app storage space, it’s probably a must-download.
